Before installing Power BI Reporting, ensure you determine which tenant will host the report. For MSPs, we recommend using your own tenant. For enterprises, use your production tenant.

Please, note that the chosen tenant must have an Azure Subscription.

During installation, you will be prompted to log in with a user account

The account used must have:

  • A Power BI Pro license
  • Logged into Power BI at least once
  • Either Owner role on the Azure Subscription or
    • both Contributor and User Access Administrator roles
  • Either Global Administrator role or
    • A combination of three specific roles: Application Administrator, Groups Administrator, and Fabric Administrator roles in Entra ID

Accessing a shared Power BI workspace requires at least a Power BI Pro license assigned to the user accessing the workspace. If you're uncertain about committing to a subscription, Power BI offers various trial options to explore its features. It's worth noting that the Power BI Pro license is also included as part of the Office E5 license package.

The reason Configuration Manager requires such extensive permissions is due to the numerous actions that have to be performed within the tenant during the installation process:

  • Setting up Log Analytics workspaces to collect and analyze data.
  • Configuring Power BI workspaces for data visualization and reporting.
  • Making the necessary changes to your Azure subscription to support the data requirements of our solution.

During the installation process, you'll be prompted to sign in with an account that has these roles. This ensures we can complete all necessary setup tasks without encountering any permission-related obstacles.
